Why Your Knees May Hurt When Running
Anyone that has taken even the shortest of jogs has experienced some sort of knee pain or issues related to running. Due to the heavy impact that running puts on the knees, it is bound to end up in pain at one point in time or another. There are a few reasons your knee is hurting during or after a run!
You Could Be Running Too Far
Yes, that’s right, distance can contribute to pain and injury. If you are consistently running long distances and feeling pain, you may actually be pushing your mileage a bit too far. Try cutting back on your miles and see if that makes a difference.
Your Stride Is Too Long
You could really just be stepping too far forward! This will increase the load your knee is experiencing. By decreasing the length of your stride your knees may respond a little better.
You Land On Your Heel
Landing on your heel also increases the load on your knees when you run. While it is best to land on your forefoot instead of the heel, it can be hard to make that transition. Switching how your foot lands will help give your knees some relief.
You Run Too Fast
There is a difference between a run and a sprint. If you are constantly running at a highly accelerated speed, you are placing unnecessary tension on the knee and forcing other areas of the body to compensate. This can also lead to low back pain as well!
You Don’t Have Good Balance
If you have trouble with balance when you are just standing around you will likely experience issues when running. As your body compensates for the activity you are doing, it will build further imbalances not just in balance alone, but in strength and flexibility on each side.
It is super important to listen to your body when you workout. If you run and experience knee pain, make a few small adjustments and see if that helps, if not you should seek the guidance of an experienced run coach or a physician to determine the root cause of your pain.
